Last week, we went to my nephew’s wedding in Tuscany, Italy.
As it was scheduled for Wednesday, we took the whole week off and made it a holiday. We rented a car and drove to Monteriggioni, Italy, together with my parents.
We stayed at a wine farm that also functioned as a small hotel.
Kai came well prepared: he had downloaded a 14k trail course of the area on his Garmin. It worked a treat!
Our hotel was about a kilometre away from this trail.
The course was perfect: it led us through villages, vineyards, fields and forests.
The best part was a medieval castle. Its circumference was only 570 metres – a bit more than a standard running track.

It was early in the morning, so there were no tourists there yet. We soaked in the beauty of this charming place and took some photos.
We then continued on our route. All this time, we had only seen two mountain bikers, but not a single runner.
On our way back, we finally spotted another runner. Surprisingly, we knew him: he was also one of the wedding guests.
After 14.5k, we got back to our hotel for breakfast.
Now, it was time to get ready for the wedding.
The location was in a tiny village of Stomennano, dating back to the 11th century. Legend has it that Queen Margherita used to stay here – the same queen who gave her name to the pizza Margherita.
The wedding was beautiful and everything worked out exactly as planned.
Unfortunately, it was also quite hot and there was little shade during the ceremony.
As soon as the talk was over, we all rushed to the shade and immediately felt better.
The setting for the dinner was under the trees.
Of course, the food was divine. My favourite two dishes were the pasta and the risotto:
We stayed two more days with my parents and enjoyed the Italian lifestyle.
The pool below next to the sea reminded me so much of Cape Town!

ah – bella Italia! Ihr hattet eine wunderschöne Feier in einer phantastischen Landschaft. Sicher wird das für alle eine ganz besondere Erinnerung bleiben, trotz Sonnenbrand, da hat das Brautpaar eine gute Wahl getroffen.
Das für ein paar Urlaubstage zu nutzen und natürlich auch läuferisch war perfekt! So lernt man doch fremde Gegenden viel besser kennen, als nur aus dem Auto heraus. Der Burgflecken ist ja wirklich eine Entdeckung! Das Luftbild und deine Bilder zeigen einen zauberhaften Ort. Tja, so eine Prise italienisches Flair geben doch wieder Schwung für den Alltag (hoffe ich doch).
Ich nutze auch gern Reisen zum laufen. Dank meiner vielen Dienstreisen habe ich da schon einiges läuferisch erkunden können. Aber so perfekt mit GPS-Track bin ich nicht unterwegs, schaue mir vorher bei Google Maps die Gegend etwas näher an.
Risotto ist nicht so meins, komisch, mir fällt das immer in der Schweiz auf, wie beliebt es dort ist.

Der Ort war wirklich zauberhaft. Wir waren schon sehr lange (20 Jahre?) nicht mehr in der Toskana und dies war eine gute Gelegenheit, die Gegend wieder zu sehen. Ich hatte es gar nicht so grün und bewaldet in Erinnerung!
Die GPS tracks waren super. Am nächsten Tag bin ich alleine losgegangen. Ich änderte die Route auf einen 10km und es funktionierte perfekt. Ich bin halt recht schlecht im Kartenlesen – da bist du schon eher der Profi! Das hast du ja schon oft bewiesen auf deinen Römerstrassen-Touren oder im Berner Oberland.
Was? Kein Risotto? Gibt’s das? 🙂
Pizza spinaci klingt auch gut. Oder mit Rucola…. und alles mit viel Käse…

Oh wow, what a setting for a wedding! Italian countryside is truly beautiful and just made for romantic garden parties. And the food looks so good, I would also have chosen Kai’s seafood meal! 😋
My favourite pizza is either Margherita or Quattro Stagioni.
It looked like something out of a fairy tale, Riitta! And you would have loved the food. I’m not into seafood (too many creepy-crawlies for me) but Kai loved it.
But I did indulge in all the pasta and pizza, especially the Margherita, of course! 🙂
What a beautiful place for a wedding! It looks like you made the most of it. The castle is amazing! Do they leave it open for people to explore freely? It all looks like a wonderful place to visit!
i do love pizza Marghterita. Of course, our American pizza is very different, but my husband and I make pizza on our grill that is more like Italian pizza, with the thin crispy crust. My favorite!
It was wonderful, Wendy. It makes me laugh when I think about my own wedding – it was in some kind of ugly little village hall. I think I paid USD 300.- for it. This was on a completely different level!
The castle is open – people live there and you can go in and out. Only cars are not permitted (which was a great thing!)
True, American pizza (which I like, too) is quite different from the original Italian. But I think that you and your husband have hit the mark with your crispy crust!
Ah we were both in Italy last week! So nice you got to see your whole family and get in a nice holiday. Italian food is the best! Also love Caprese or Margarita pizza thin style. Tomatoes we so good in Italy!
What a fantastic getaway for a family wedding. Setting looked amazing. Fantastic food. Making me hungry. Love it all. Even the creepy crawlies🤣 Margherita pizza? Not sure what that is! My fav is thick crust Hawaiian w black olives & Feta along w a robust red wine.
I just run and explore, no marked trails. All roads lead to somewhere🤣

Bella Italia ! Dann noch Toskana – mit mein Favorit – ich liebe die italienische Sprache, die Lebensweise der Italiener, was gibt es Schöneres, als dort den Bund der Ehe einzugehen – gut gemacht. Draußen in der Natur schön speisen, hätte ich auch gerne mitgegessen, wenn man eure Teller so sieht, machst du wohl extra, damit uns das Wasser im Munde zusammenläuft, ja, ja, die liebe Catrina !!
Und dann ein Lauf in der schönen Toskana, sowieso, auch das hätte ich liebend gerne getan, habe ich auch vor Jahren genauso gemacht, nur ohne Hochzeit ! 🙂 Bin sogar in Florenz gelaufen……….in Kalabrien und auf Sizilien !
Trägst du im ” normalen ” Leben immer Brille – ebenso wie Kai ? Schickes Outfit – YES !!
Wenn ich in einem fremden Land laufe, dann einfach so – los und davon , ohne mir vorher den Kopf darüber zu zerbrechen, wohin – und das ging immer gut !

Die Toskana ist wirklich wunderschön, liebe Margitta. Ich war schon so lange nicht mehr da – ich wusste gar nicht mehr, dass es so grün ist und so viele Wälder hat. Als Kulisse für eine Hochzeit ist es wunderschön!
Claro, die Food Fotos sind extra dazu da, den Appetit anzuregen! Der Risotto war himmlisch. Meine Schwester und ihr sizilianischer Mann lieben Essen über alles. So konnten wir uns vor Restaurantbesuchen kaum mehr retten… zum Glück konnten wir noch ein bisschen laufen zum Ausgleich.
Ich bin noch nie in Kalabrien oder Sizilien gelaufen. Nicht mal Florenz… siehst du, da habe ich noch einiges zu tun!
Ja, Kai und ich haben leider meist Brillen auf – unsere Sonnenbrillen sind auch geschliffen für die Ferne. Zum Glück können wir noch ohne Brillen lesen.
Super – einfach drauflos! Das ist auch schön. So stolpert man auch über interessante Dinge – und erlebt vielleicht noch Interessanteres als auf einer geplanten Route.

Die Brunnen haben mich positiv überrascht – es gab auch Toiletten in den Dörfern. Fast so gut wie in der Schweiz. 🙂
Sich bei einer Hochzeitsansprache einen Sonnenbrand zu holen ist mal was Neues… ich hätte sogar noch Sonnencrème dabei gehabt, habe es aber vergessen.

Italy is my favorite place. I’ve been to Rome, Naples, Florence, and Venice, and would love to visit Tuscany and Sicily. Maybe one day.

Favorite pizza comes from a local place where the owners are Sicilian. It’s a tie between a sausage/rosemary/potato pizza and a pizza with crispy pepperoni cups and hot honey.

The wedding location was perfect. I cringe when I compare it to my own wedding, which was quite simple and lowkey!

Dort ‘schnell’ mal einen Urlaub einzuschieben, ist auch nicht die schlechteste Ablenkung vom Alltag! 😆 Die hügelige Gegend zu erkunden wäre ein paar Tage mehr wert gewesen, oder? – Mir gefällt das Castle sehr gut, allerdings stören mich bei der Luftaufnahme die Autos dort drinnen! 😥 Hätte ich Zeit gehabt, wäre ich wahrscheinlich alle Ecken abgegangen und hätte mich dann zu einem Café hingesetzt! … aber eure Residenz (Hotel) ist ja auch fast sowas wie ein kleines Landschlösschen! … hat was … 🙂
Deine Schwester liebt essen … nicht so Bewegung? – Aber eine Rede in brennender Sonne … hoffentlich hat er nicht so lange geredet? … und das Essen … da sieht ja einiges sehr lecker aus, auch und gerade Pasta und Risotto!!!
Wir waren zuletzt 2015 in der Toskana, allerdings mit Schülern in Viareggio. Von dort aus haben wir z. B. auch Florenz, besucht. 2015 konnte ich in Florenz nicht laufen, dafür 1996, als wir auf dem Weg nach Rom waren. …und in Rom bin ich dann auch gelaufen, ebenso wie 2015 in Viareggio! (Leider alles nur bei Studienfahrten.)
Ansonsten laufe ich in fremden Gegenden meist einfach drauf los. Bin ich in Unterkünften, in denen Karten einzusehen sind, schaue ich sie mir evtl. mal vorher an, oder frage einfach in welche Richtung es sich zu laufen lohnt. – Es macht großen Spaß auf Entdeckertour zu gehen! 😆 – Aber mit einer GPX-Datei auf der Uhr ist man natürlich super präpariert.
Meine Lieblingspizzeria war eine zeitlang unser Antik Lokales ( https://antik-lokales.de ). Sie hatten dort eine Fantasy-Pizza mit wahnsinnig vielen Toppings, die dann so halb ‘zusammengeklappt’ wurde. Ich esse auch gerne mal eine Tonno, Funghi, auch mal eine vegetarische, oder eine mit vieeel Käse!
Im Alltag angekommen geht es hoffentlich gut … und keine Erkältung, oder Grippe abholen! … du hast dir einiges vorgenommen … aber ich will ja keinen Druck aufbauen 😛 … ich glaube den machst du dir selbst!

Wir haben auch darüber nachgedacht, ein bisschen mehr zu verlängern… aber am Ende war es zu kompliziert (wir hatten ja noch die Eltern dabei).
Die Autos haben mich auch gestört! Es sind keine Autos im Castle erlaubt, ausser Lieferanten und Anwohner. Später sind wir für einen Kaffee mit meinen Eltern wieder dahin gegangen – alle Besucher müssen auf einen Parkplatz draussen parken und zu Fuss zur Burg laufen. Fand ich gut, so müssen die Touris sich den Besuch wenigstens erarbeiten. 🙂
Meine Schwester und ihr Mann (von ihm fehlt ein Foto) lieben Essen und können stundenlang darüber philosophieren. Obwohl sie keine Bewegungsmenschen sind, sind sie im Pool geschwommen und haben etwas Gymnastik gemacht. Immerhin 🙂
Florenz und Rom! Sehr cool, dass du diese Städte besuchen konntest. Ich bin noch nie in Rom gelaufen, muss auch eindrücklich sein.
Du machst es wie Elke. Ihr seid beide erfahrene Kartenleser mit guter Orientierung. Das macht noch mehr Spass, weil man sich die Route erarbeiten muss. Heute habe ich wieder die Uhren-Führung für einen langen Lauf benutzt… und ich habe mich trotzdem ein paar Mal verlaufen.
Zusammengeklappte Pizza mag ich sehr! Eine Calzone mit viel Käse, so richtig deftig. Super!!
Wieso graust es dir vor morgen – also heute? Vielleicht wegen der Wärme? Es ist schon heftig – aber heute waren wir um 10 Uhr mit dem langen Lauf fertig. Da war es zum Glück noch sehr erträglich.

vorhergesagt waren 37°, die wir aber schon längst erreicht haben! Wenigstens ist die Luftfeuchtigkeit auf 24% runter gegangen. Heute morgen bin ich um 7 Uhr gelaufen, bei 21° und 74% Luftfeuchtigkeit. … da vergeht es einem. Es kommt aber nix von nix, also bin ich raus, um wieder rein zu kommen! 😆

What a great idea to download a running route before you go. I usually end up searching for trail maps wherever we end up. On our last trip, we were in Mill Valley, California and were just lucky to find the Dipsea trail, which is a famous trail and race. It starts with over 600 steps!

Garmin courses are excellent. I have also been using them in unfamiliar places. I have an AllTrails subscription, so sometimes I go on there to find the highly rated local trails, and then download the route and convert it to GPX file which I then import to my Garmin watch. Works a treat!

Right now I’m in Germany where my mother-in-law lives. There’s a lot of countryside to explore, so this might be a great opportunity to try it out!
What an amazing outdoor wedding, Catrina. So wonderful your parents were able to ride with you and Kai. As you mentioned in one of responding comments, with 4 people it does big time reduce environmental impact. You and Kai look really sharp all dressed up.
So glad you were able to get out for that 14 kilometer run. That castle looks so amazing. As far as picking routes when running in a new place, I’m pretty “old school”. Sometimes I will use Google for information. Other times using guide books or just plain maps. Nowadays maps are sometimes hard to come by, as paper maps are no longer often printed. If they are a quite a few years old, sometimes they become outdated due to route changes. On the other hand if the watch or phone runs out of battery, the map is tried and true. 😀

I have used maps in the past as well. Sometimes they have a map hung up at the beginning of a trail. Then I take a photo of it so that I can consult it later on. It’s very handy!
I was glad that we could at least car-pool to reduce the environmental impact. It was also easier for my parents to do the trip, I don’t think they could have done it alone at their age. And we had fun in the car!
