Running For a Bottle of Wine

I did my first race in South Africa! It was a 10k trail race at the Spier Farm, which is a 20 minute drive out of Cape Town. With only 150 runners it was a small, intimate event.

It was an overcast, drizzly Sunday morning when we arrived at 7am. Perfect weather for a race! Instead of bibs with a chip, our numbers were simply written on the back of our hands with a marker. The time would be taken by volunteers as we passed the finishing line.

The 10k was one big circle around the farm – lots of bushes, some trees and a number of vineyards. The trail itself was fairly easy, even for me. There was one aid station after 3k, where a guy handed out water in a few cups that everyone shared. Yep, the same cups. South African’s are no sissies when it comes germs!

The race was so much fun it was nearly relaxing. The runners spaced out very quickly so there was ample room to enjoy the beautiful scenery, notice the typical red soil and admire the grapes in the vineyards.

At the award ceremony, we learned that both Kai (43:58) and myself (45:18) had won in the masters’ category. I was happy to place as 2nd woman overall, with only one younger woman 24 seconds faster than myself. Given the small number of participants it wasn’t really a big achievement but Kai and myself were pleased all the same. Best of all is that we both won a bottle of wine of the farm. Definitely a nice prize!

Talking about wine: the vineyards around Cape Town are phenomenal! Even if you don’t drink wine, they are worth a visit. At the weekends, the farms often host markets and special events. You can sit in the grass under a shady tree and enjoy a wine tasting or have an excellent dinner in a beautiful setting. To close, here are some photos to give an impression:

  1. Liebe Catrina, ES IST DIENSTAG, ich schaue in den PC – und sieh da – neue Nachrichten von Catrinchen, die erfolgreich einen 10 km Lauf hinter sich gebracht hat, strahlend – wie immer ! Glückwunsch ! Prima Zeit – und nächstes Mal schlägst du deine Konkurrentin, wäre ja gelacht, die paar Sekündchen !!

    Und immer Sonne, herrliche Umgebung – passt !!

    Habe in meiner “Laufkarriere ” sehr viele und auch sehr große Pokale, Plaketten gewonnen, Medaillen ohne Ende und vieles mehr – jedes einzelne Teil erinnert mich an schöne, zum Teil auch sehr schwere Läufe, ich möchte nichts missen, habe sie in meinem Arbeitszimmer positioniert – sie erinnern mich alle an das, was ich am liebsten tue.

    Du trinkst keinen Wein ? Ich schon, ich liebe trockenen Rotwein – für mich ein wahrer Genuss.

    Freut mich für dich – dein Lächeln spricht Bände !!

      Haha, da siehst du, ich versuche meinen Dienstag-Rhythmus beizubehalten! Dienstag ist doch ein etwas öder Tag, der muss mit einem Blogpost aufgepeppt werden!
      Danke für die Glückwünsche! Der Lauf hat auch richtig Spass gemacht! Ja, die paar Sekündchen… wenn ich das gewusst hätte während des Laufs!
      Das glaube ich, dass viele, viele Pokale, Plaketten und Medaillen deine Wände zieren. Du hast ja richtig abgeräumt in deiner Laufkarriere. Schön, dass du sie auch als Erinnerung behältst! Du hast sie ja auch hart verdient.
      Ah, doch, ich trinke gerne Wein, aber – du wirst es nicht glauben – am liebsten einen grässlich süssen Weisswein! Kai wird mit dir den trockenen Rotwein trinken. 😉
      Übrigens ist es hier extrem windig – darüber werde ich nächste Woche berichten. Bei dir ist es bestimmt auch windig. Und leider auch etwas kalt mit 5°! Halte durch – der Frühling kommt bestimmt!

      zuerst einmal herzlichen Glückwunsch Dir und Kai für euren tollen Erfolg! Toller Einstand dort unten! 🙂 Doppelt schön, dass es soviel Spaß gemacht hat! … und dann noch einen schönen Preis abgesahnt!
      Ich selbst bin nicht nur kein Weintrinker … 😉
      Mein wertvollstes “Mitbringsel” (goodie), dass ich bei einem Rennen bekommen habe, war ein toller Rucksack, gerade für Gebirgsläufe tauglich. In den Jahren danach habe ich ihn oft genutzt, bis er zerschlissen war!
      Also, weiter so!

        Danke dir! Ja, eine Flasche Wein ist mal was anderes. Als Preis getrunken schmeckt er natürlich doppelt gut. 🙂
        Oh, ein Rucksack für Gebirgsläufe! Das ist aber wirklich nützlich! Das erinnert mich an eine Laufkollegin: sie hat einen sehr praktischen Sportsack bekommen, mit einem Abteil für die riechenden Sportschuhe und alte Wäsche. Den hat sie auch jahrelang benutzt. Die beste Sporttasche ever!
        Dir ebenfalls: weiter so! Das Jahr 2020 hat gut begonnen.

  3. I don’t drink, but wineries tend to be very scenic & soothing & I’ve visited many (both when I drank, and after I stopped drinking).

    This sounds like such a fun race — and I’m envious of those easy trails! I’ve yet to do a trail race which has such nice trails (although I haven’t done ones that are super tough either).

    1. Ah, you stopped drinking. I’m trying to reduce my wine drinking habits to the weekend. But it’s hard with all these wineries around!
      You would have enjoyed these trails for sure!

  4. Congrats to both of you for sweeping that masters category! Looks like more gorgeous scenery. Yikes on the shared cup thing. I guess us foreigners are uptight about germs. Haha!
    The first time I ever won an AG award, the prize was money, which really surprised me. I’ve also won a really nice pillow. Weird but I still use it!

      You won money like an elite runner! Nice! Haha, a pillow is really weird but very useful. I’m sure I’d be using that too!

  5. Dang you’re fast…. 10k trail race in 45 minutes, that’s amazing! Congrats! And even better… a bottle of wine at the finish line! I’ve run a Napa race before and also received wine at the end 🙂

    1. I was surprised myself! But the trail was really easy, more like a jeep track. The bottle of wine was the best! So cool you got wine in Napa as well!

  6. This does look like a fun event! I’m not much of a drinker, but I do prefer wine over other options. Congrats on the awards! There were only 43 people at my race on Saturday, but there were six in my age group…so I felt a little better about my AG win LOL I always say, how you place is contingent on who else shows up, but if you run a strong race it’s all good.

    1. I just went back and checked: there were 11 in my age group, 7% of the participants. That’s a lot more balanced than in your race, with 14% in your age group! I agree, a lot depends on who shows up – sometimes it’s more about strategy than about speed! 😉

    Well, I m a slow runner and never wone any price, but when I have a look to the few cups for everybody, I think my best item in a swag bag was a flexible mug 😆

    1. A flexible mug! Ah, Volker, now THAT would have been a practical prize! It would have spared us all the germ-sharing! 😄
      You would love the vineyards, I’m sure! The colourful flowers and the sound of the wind in the trees make it so peaceful.

    wow, tolle Zeit, tolles Rennen. Ich gratuliere zum vollen Erfolg. Und dann noch mit dem Wein prämiert 🙂
    Spaß hattest du sowieso, das verrät dein Lächeln auf den Fotos.
    Ein bisschen neidisch könnte man wegen dem blauen Himmel werden und den wohl etwas anderen Temperaturen als wir sie hier gerade haben 😆
    Aber es sei dir gegönnt.
    Was ich wirklich toll finde, sind die Geschenke, die man beim Uewersauertraillauf in Luxemburg im Starterbeutel hat. Da ist immer was drin, was man wirklich gebrauchen kann. Zum Beispiel ist dort auch jedes Mal ein Silikon Trinkbecher drin. Den kannst du zusammen knüllen wie ein Taschentuch und einstecken. Oder du kannst den nur paar Gramm schweren Becher an deinem Startnummernband festmachen. Egal wie, so hast du immer einen Trinkbecher dabei und musst bei keinem Rennen mehr die bereitgestellten Plastik oder Papierbecher nutzen 🙂
    Das wäre wohl auch was für dich in Südafrika. Da hättest du dann immer deinen eigenen Becher dabei.

      Danke dir! Es hat wirklich Spass gemacht! 😊 Der Himmel ist zwar manchmal etwas wolkig und manchmal hat es einen krassen Wind, aber sonst können wir uns nicht beklagen. 😊
      Der faltbare Trinkbecher! Das hat auch Volker erwähnt! Genau so etwas müssten wir hier haben. Rein aus Umweltschutz-technischen Gründen (und hygienischen) macht das wirklich Sinn. 👍🏻 Mal sehen, ob wir hier so etwas finden.
      Ich wünsche dir viel Spass bei deinen Waldläufen in Vorbereitung auf was dieses Jahr bei dir für Wettkämpfe anstehen!

  11. Yay! Your first race on African soil! Love that the trail was not very technical AND that you and hubby both won in the master’s category! That’s awesome and a bottle of wine is the perfect prize. I’m not a wine drinker but my dad and husband are so I really appreciate it. As always, you’ve also captured your experience so beautifully in photos as well.

    1. It was such an awesome experience! From your race recaps I knew that races in these beautiful African regions would be great and it certainly lived up to and exceeded my expectations.
      I try to do justice to this amazing country with the photos – not sure if I always succeed, LOL! 😊

    I LOVE wine. I love No Way Rose, Jam Jar (a red blend, Coppola Pinot Noir… Give me all the wines!

    What a great experience and such a beautiful course. You really seem to be adapting well to this opportunity!

    1. Oh, I remember the Jam Jar from Florida! They had a sweet white wine that I loved. (Yes, I admit I’m one of those, the sweet wine drinkers, LOL).
      This country is so easy to love and to adapt to… it nearly feels like home. I’m sure you would love it here, too!

  13. Wine AND a 10K? What could be better? Congratulations on your fantastic masters’ win. Way to go! My friend did Comrade’s Marathon in south Africa in 2018 and is doing it again this year. She told me about the wonderful South African wines she tried while she was there. What a beautiful place to run!

    1. The two best things in the world, right? A wine and a 10k!
      You have friend that did and will do the Comrades? That is AWESOME! I really want to do it one day. It’s 89k long and the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon. The entry tickets always sell so fast. Your friend should write a guest post on your blog about it!

  15. Congratulations! That’s a great prize! I placed in a small July 4th race one and won some festive holiday lights that we still use. I would love an easy trail race like that. On the other hand, as much as I care about the environment, I’m not sure about sharing cups at a race!

  16. Congrats to you and the hubby! So cool about the wine. Well, I say it because I do love wine. I like red wine throughout the year and prefer white in the summer. But again, I can still drink both whenever.

    1. Me too! I really enjoy wine. 😊 I’m embarrassed to admit that I like sweet white wine best. I think you would really enjoy the wine tasting here – so many varieties to choose from! 😊
